STEVEN WILSON TRIESTE TEATRO POLITEAMA ROSSETTI 26/04/2016 “Di nuovo?", "Steven Wilson di nuovo ??" e molti altri commenti che, insieme con mia figlia e amici abbiamo dovuto sentire, una volta che abbiamo "annunciato" che avremmo seguito colui che mia figlia definisce come "Mr Cool", per la ottava e nona volta durante il Hand Cannot Erase Tour iniziato nel 2015. Per fortuna non seguiamo quello che dice la gente ,ci basta lasciarci trasportare dalle nostre emozioni, dai nervi, dal cuore e dalla pancia. Dico questo dopo aver visto quello che a mio parere è stato il miglior concerto che Steven e la sua straordinaria e geniale band abbiano mai prodotto. Sì, naturalmente, tutto si riduce al gusto , ma la bellezza della musica è che tutti possiamo avere le nostre opinioni e reazioni; il mio pensiero è così e cercherò di motivare ciò che ho visto e sentito. Come al solito è stato scelto un luogo bellissimo, un vero e proprio teatro pittoresco, con un soffitto dipinto da un cielo azzurro e nuvole, costruito con legno dorato colorato, il tipico luogo che ti lascia senza fiato. Il teatro era pieno e anche questa è un'altra cosa usuale. Ci aspettavamo una replica simile agli altri spettacoli che Steven aveva prodotto nel corso dell'ultimo anno. Sbagliato ! Veramente sbagliato ! Il primo set è stato tutto basato sull’esecuzione completa di HCE, il secondo set invece un mix di canzoni di successo di Steven dai Porcupine Tree fino alla sua carriera da solista. Sì, naturalmente, come detto tutto si riduce al gusto, ma da subito ho avuto la sensazione che le cose fossero diverse, che Steven avesse finalmente scatenato il talento di Dave Kilminster e la sua chitarra e il super potente Craig Blundell alla batteria; questo risulta essere un punto chiave, perché il come "sostituire" Guthrie Govan e Marco Minnemann credo sia stata una delle più grandi sfide musicali che questi due musicisti abbiano mai affrontato nella loro carriera. Anche in questo caso, però, subito dopo l'apertura "First Regret" abbiamo ricevuto il messaggio, forte e chiaro. "3 Years older" ci ha fatto capire quello che questa sera sarebbe stata, gettandoci emozioni forti in faccia attraverso suoni potenti con un pizzico di tristezza e volumi alti ma con amore e gentilezza al tempo stesso. Il clou del primo set è stato una performance strappa lacrime di "routine" e una incredibilmente potente "Home Invasion" insieme ad "Ancestral". Steven ha sottolineato il fatto che questa è la migliore band con cui abbia mai suonato e si può veramente capire e sentire il perché di tale affermazione ; sembra incredibile pensando dove il progetto fosse un anno fa e sono altrettanto sorpreso ed emozionato nel scrivere questo, ma io sono con Steven. Le canzoni di cui sopra, realmente trasferiscono quell'incredibile senso di legame musicale che la band ha maturato , l’effetto è come se si ascoltasse un'orchestra, anche se la squadra è costruita con solo 5 persone misto alla voglia che hanno di divertirsi e prendersi in giro e scherzare l’uno con l’altro. Ma la cosa più sorprendente e importante è stata la svolta più dura e rock data alle canzoni ed è chiaro che ora David e il suo groove e Craig e la sua mano di pietra, giocano un ruolo enorme nella band, contribuendo con le proprie competenze ed il talento alla riuscita dello spettacolo. Non c'è molto da dire su Adam Holzman alle tastiere, a parte il fatto che egli è un vero genio e dà quel tocco di prog anni ’70 al tutto. Il suo "solo" o meglio la sua incredibile performance su "Home Invasion / Regret # 9" è qualcosa che ti fa capire che le tastiere possono essere super sexy e fresche come un assolo di chitarra. Personalmente Adam mi ha catapultato di nuovo negli anni '70 al periodo "Selling England By The Pound" dei Genesys (A Steven non piacerà questo ..ahaha) e per me questo è tanto! Nicholas (come Steven ama riferirsi a lui) Nick Beggs, suona tutti i suoi diversi tipi di bassi, le tastiere, la chitarra e canta come un angelo; trovate un altro musicista di talento e showman come lui e poi discuteremo sul più bravo, nel frattempo, una standing ovation virtuale per le sue capacità artistiche, ma anche per il suo atteggiamento e l'empatia che raggiunge con la folla, Bravo !!! Ultimo ma non meno importante "Mr Cool" stesso; sembrava essere felice e di ottimo umore e il modo con cui ha parlato con il pubblico, riso, scherzato e raccontato le sue storie e la sua musica è stata la ciliegina sulla torta! Steven e la band hanno omaggiato David Bowie eseguendo la canzone dei Porcupine Tree "Lazarus", spiegando come un pezzo con lo stesso titolo si trovi anche sull’ultimo album di David e anche perché in "Lazarus" vi è una linea che parla di un "David" e che tutto ciò pareva avere una sorta di senso e di coincidenza. Durante il bis è stato omaggiato anche Prince attraverso la canzone "Sign O’ the times", fantastico! Il piatto forte del secondo set sono stati i brani dei Porcupine Tree, "Dark Matter", "Don’t hate me” e "Sleep Together" più "Harmony Korine" e la nuova "Vermillioncore"; perché ? Perché torna in gioco il gusto personale e perché il taglio più duro dato ai pezzi, hanno dato come la sensazione di aver portato lo show ad un livello diverso, più alto , quasi un livello al quale neanche la super band pensasse di poter arrivare e questo nonostante avessimo ascoltato quei pezzi molte volte. Ah, c'è stato un problema tecnico allo schermo, dove vengono proiettati i ​​video , come si può immaginare a nessuno è fregato un accidenti! Tutti in piedi per il bis, con il pubblico che canta in "The Sound of Muzak" e con gli occhi lucidi ad ascoltare "The Raven that refused to sing". 3 ore e 10 minuti con una pausa di 20 minuti, soldi ,tempo ,poco sonno ben spesi ancora una volta! Stasera abbiamo la data di Firenze, la mia città e la mia personale "Home Invasion", in un luogo molto asettico purtroppo ; ma chi se ne frega, ci sarà un numero incredibile di amici e ci sarà la musica. Perché non ci si dovrebbe perdere Steven Wilson e la sua band durante il resto di questo tour? Perché non si dovrebbe farlo, fine! Ma ancora ed una volta e per tutte, ricordate, tutto si riduce al gusto. Review by Alessandro Vane ------------------------------------------- STEVEN WILSON TRIESTE TEATRO POLITEAMA ROSSETTI 26/04/2016 “Again?” , “Steven Wilson again??” and many other comments I , together with my daughter and friends had to hear once we “announced” we would be following the man my daughter branded and defined as “Mr Cool” for the 8th and 9th time on the Hand Cannot Erase Tour. Luckily we don’t follow what people say and just go with our emotions, nerves , heart and stomach. I say this after having seen what in my opinion was the best gig Steven and his outstanding band of musical geniuses ever produced. Yes of course it all comes down to taste and the beauty of music is that we can all have our opinions and reactions, mine is so and I will try to motivate it at my own personal best. As usual a beautiful venue was chosen , a real picturesque theatre with a ceiling painted with blue sky and clouds , built in a goldish coloured wood , the typical place which leaves you breathless. The Theatre was full and that is another usual thing. We were expecting a replica similar to the other shows which Steven produced during the last year. Wrong ! So wrong ! The first set was the whole Hand Cannot erase performance , the second a mix of Steven’s successful songs from Porcupine Tree to his solo career. Yes of course as we said it all comes down to taste , but straight away I got the feeling things were different, as Steven finally unleashed the massively talented Dave Kilminster and his guitar and the super powerful Craig Blundell on drums ; this is a key point as stepping in to “replace” Guthrie Govan and Marco Minnemann was maybe one of the biggest musical challenges these two musicians ever faced. Again though , just after the opening and “First regret” we got the message, strong and loud. “3 years older” just made us hear what this evening was all going to be about and that was emotions thrown in your face through power with a pinch of sadness ; loudness , with love and kindness. The highlight of the first set was a heart breaking performance of “Routine” and an incredibly powerful “Home Invasion” together with “Ancestral”. Steven remarked the fact that this is the best band he has ever played with and you can really sense it ; seemed incredible to be even thought a year ago and I am both surprised and excited to write this , but I am with Steven. The above mentioned songs really transferred that incredible sense musical bonding like listening to an orchestra , a team built of only 5 people , enjoying themselves and making fun and jokes one to each other ; but the striking and major thing was and is, the rock twist which has been given to the songs and it is clear that now David and his groove and Craig and his stone hard drum hits , play a massive part in the band, bringing their skills, talent and feel to the show. There isn’t much to say about Adam Holzman on Keyboards , a part from the fact that he is a true genius and gives that 70’s prog touch to it all. His “solo” or better his incredible performance on “Home invasion/Regret #9” is something which makes you feel that keyboards can super sexy and cool like a guitar solo. Personally Adam just “missiles” me back into the 70’s to the “Selling England by the pound” era of Genesys ( Steven won’t like this ..laugh ) and to me that is something! Nicholas (like Steven likes to refer to him) Nick Beggs, plays all his bass strings, keyboards , guitar and sings like an angel ; find another talented musician and showman like him and then we will discuss it all, in the meantime a virtual standing ovation to his skills but also to his attitude and the empathy he reaches with the crowds, Bravo!!! Last but not least “Mr Cool” himself, seemed to be in a great and happy mood and the way he spoke to the audience, made fun and jokes and told his stories just was the icing on the cake! Steven and the band played a tribute to David Bowie by performing the Porcupine Tree song “Lazarus” , which he explained to be so, as on David’s last album there is a song called the same way and also ‘cause in “his own Lazarus” there is a line which talks about a “David” so it all made sense. During the encore also a tribute to Prince was played through “Sign O’ the times”, fantastic! My highlight of the second set were the Porcupine Tree songs, “Dark Matter” , “Don’t hate me” and “Sleep together” plus “Harmony Korine” and the new “Vermillioncore” ; why ? Because it comes down to taste again and the harder groove and stronger feel given to these songs , just made me feel I was watching a show I have seen many times, taken to a much higher level, to a step this super band, maybe ,did not even think they could get to. Oh there was a technical problem which occurred to the screen, where the video’s are projected , as you can imagine no one really gave a damn ! All up and standing for the Encore , with the audience singing to “The Sound of Muzak” and balling their eyes to “The Raven that refused to sing”. 3 hours and 10 minutes with a 20 minute break, money , time and lack of sleep well spent once again ! Tonight it’s Firenze , my hometown and my personal “Home Invasion” , in a very aseptic venue ; but who cares, there will be an incredible number of friends and there will be the music. Why should you not miss Steven Wilson and his band on the rest of this tour ? Because you should not , end of ! But once again and for all , remember , it all comes down to taste.
